Poppea was a woman who lived in ancient Rome. She was born in Pompeii, and
eventually had a magnificent villa a few miles from that doomed city, near
the coast. Her villa can be visited today and is well worth a visit. She is
best known as the Emperor Nero’s second wife.
Her mother, an elder, Poppea Sabina was a distinguished woman, whom the
Roman Historian
Tacitus
praises as a wealthy woman and a woman of
distinction. Tacitus describes her as ‘the loveliest woman of her day’.
Unfortunately, it does not seem that her daughter followed in her
footsteps. Her first marriage was to
Rufrius Crispinus,
a man of equestrian rank who was executed under Nero. Her second husband
was Otho, a good friend of Nero’s. She became Nero’s mistress, and then
divorced her husband. According to Tacitus, she was quite a ruthless
woman. He states that she married poor Otho to get close to Nero, thus
becoming his favorite mistress. She then urged him to divorce his wife and
the rest is history.
When she died (some say Nero killed her while she was pregnant) probably of
a miscarriage, Nero mourned her death and bestowed her with divinity. She
was said to enjoy milk baths and the finer things in life (evident if you
see her villa).
The opera L'Incoronazione di Poppea by
Claudio Monteverdi
is about her life.
